"If you want to go QUICKLY, go ALONE. If you want to go FAR, go TOGETHER." -African Proverb
Ubuntu 🫶
I spent the last few days in St. Louis at Scaling New Heights soaking in all the inspiration & insight. One of the speakers was Guylaine Saint Juste, who spoke about the African concept of Ubuntu {oo·boon·too}. After her talk, I dug more into this concept to see how it can be applied to our personal and professional growth. Let’s explore the true meaning of Ubuntu & ways we can apply it in our professional & personal lives.
Ubuntu can be defined as humanity or kindness towards others, and it is a fundamental value that is woven into the fabric of African societies. Ubuntu emphasizes the interconnectedness and interdependence of all people, and it is centered around the idea that one person can only be a person through other people.
Understanding the Essence of Ubuntu
Ubuntu calls us to embrace the humanity of others, to see ourselves in them, and to treat them with dignity and respect. The Ubuntu philosophy insists upon the fact that we are all connected and that we thrive or suffer depending on the well-being of our communities. The Ubuntu philosophy emphasizes the individual’s contribution to the whole, for the purpose of building a mutually beneficial, cooperative, and united society.
How Ubuntu Can be Utilized for Personal Growth
If we embrace the Ubuntu philosophy in our personal lives, it can lead to a greater sense of satisfaction, purpose, and connection. When we practice Ubuntu, we become more empathetic and compassionate towards others, and we view their success as our success. When we work towards the common good, we find that our own needs are fulfilled as well. Practicing Ubuntu can help us to build deeper relationships, create a sense of belonging, and foster a greater sense of community.
How Ubuntu Can be Utilized for Professional Growth
In the professional setting, Ubuntu can help us to work more collaboratively, to recognize and value each other’s unique contributions, and to build stronger, more effective teams. When we embrace Ubuntu at work, we become more efficient and productive, since we are not working to benefit ourselves alone, but the company at large. Ubuntu encourages individuals to consider the larger picture and see how their actions affect a greater whole.
