#45 - What In The Word!?
Words can be tricky, and though we all may have the same basic definition of one, we often attach our own personal interpretations and meanings to them.
Welcome to the 45th issue of 5 Minute Friday! Every week I share a short newsletter with tips & resources to help you with your professional & personal growth & development!
Let's start "GROWING" through our human journey instead of just "GOING" through it!
"Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder." -Rumi
Have you ever had a conversation with someone where they just didn't seem to understand your point of view? You explained yourself clearly, provided evidence & yet, their misunderstandings persisted? Chances are, it wasn't what you said, but how you said it. Words, little symbols & sounds we use to express our thoughts, feelings, and ideas, can be tricky, and though we all may have the same basic definition of one, we often attach our own personal interpretations and meanings to them. So, we must keep in mind how others may hear and interpret our words. In this week's post, we will discuss the power of words, how they can be used to persuade & also share some tips for effective communication during high-stress situations.
Let's start with a simple truth: words are powerful. They can inspire, they can hurt, they can persuade, and they can confuse. We all know the dictionary definitions of the words we use, but the reality is, words carry a lot more than just their objective meanings. They carry our emotions, our attitudes, and our personal interpretations. And here's the kicker - they can be interpreted differently by different people.
Take the word "freedom," for example. It's a positive word, right? But for some, it might evoke images of independence and self-reliance, while for others, it might bring up feelings of isolation and fear of the unknown. So, when we communicate, we need to be mindful of how our words might be received by others, beyond their dictionary definitions.
Now, if we want to be persuasive and effective communicators, we need to take this a step further. We need to consider our audience's preconceptions, their beliefs, and their fears. We need to use words that resonate with them, words that align with their worldview. This is not about manipulation but about empathy and understanding. It's about meeting people where they are and speaking their language.
But what happens when we find ourselves in high-stress situations? Stress can throw a wrench in our communication efforts. It can cloud our thinking, make us reactive, and lead us to use words that we might regret later. So, how can we maintain effective communication even under stress?
Here are a few tips:
1. Stay Calm: Easier said than done, I know. But taking a few deep breaths can help you stay focused and choose your words more wisely.
2. Keep it simple: Stress can make it harder for both you and the other person to process information. So, try to use simple language and avoid complex sentences.
3. Listen and empathize: Try to understand the other person's perspective. This can help you respond in a way that acknowledges their feelings and thoughts.
4. Mind your body language: Non-verbal cues can speak louder than words. So, maintain eye contact, use positive gestures, and show that you're present and engaged.
In conclusion, words are not just about what we say. They're about what others hear. And to be effective communicators, we need to be mindful of this. We need to consider our audience's preconceptions and use words that resonate with them. And even in high-stress situations, we can maintain effective communication by staying calm, keeping it simple, listening, and minding our body language.
So, the next time you're in a conversation, remember: your words have power. Use them wisely.

Toastmasters
Since Iām discussing words and communication, it seems fitting for me to share a specific "tool" that has significantly improved my communication skills and boosted my confidence. This tool has been particularly effective for me and I believe it could be beneficial for others as well. That tool is āToastmasters.ā Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that operates clubs all over the world to promote communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. Iāll share with you my Toastmasters journey and how itās helped me.
I still remember the day I logged into my first Toastmasters meeting on zoom. I was nervous, unsure of what I was getting into, and completely out of my comfort zone. All the members gave me a warm welcome & were very friendly and supportive. After the first meeting I had a better idea of what Toastmasters was & then I decided to become a member (pretty inexpensive). After a few weeks I gave my first icebreaker speech and then over the next few months I delivered more speeches and took on more roles. After a few months I noticed a significant change in my self-esteem. I was no longer the person who shied away from expressing his thoughts. I became more assertive, more confident, and more comfortable in my skin.
Toastmasters has been more than just a club to me; itās a platform that has allowed me to explore my potential as a communicator. The supportive environment and constructive feedback from fellow members helps me refine my public speaking skills. I have also learned to articulate my thoughts more clearly, control my body language, and use voice variation to make my speeches more engaging.
Looking back, I realize that Toastmasters is not just about becoming a better speaker; itās about breaking out of my comfort zone and growing as an individual. Itās also about overcoming my fears and embracing new challenges. It is about becoming a better version of myself.
To anyone looking to improve their communication skills, gain confidence, or simply break out of their comfort zone, I highly recommend joining Toastmasters. It's a journey of self-discovery, growth, and empowerment. And trust me, it's a journey worth embarking on. Check out their website: https://www.toastmasters.org.
